As Dr Fionnuala O’Connell, Consultant Pathologist explains “ Our ability to image our specimens within the department has saved much time and made our laboratory processes more efficient and accurate. For example with core biopsy specimens, if representative microcalcifications are not identified in the initial 3 levels performed, the blocks are imaged using the BIOPTICS to confirm that calcifications are still present in the block and that further levels are indicated. The BIOPTICS is also essential for accurate and directed sampling for wire localized excision specimens for calcifications for confirmation that the appropriate calcifications are present and targeted sampling”.
